Here we have a sofa seat base cushion in need of stitching repairs. Unfortunately the seam on the top of the seat base cushion has burst and the stitches have unravelled leaving a large hole.
Typically having a seam open like this and continuing to use the sofa as normal will result in the stitches continuing to unravel and the hole getting bigger.
In order to repair the technician will begin by using pliers to remove all the stray pieces of cotton from the holes of the seam to clear it out.
After the seam is clear the technician will thread a curved needle with cotton.
Firstly the technician takes the curved needle under the leather and through a hole approximately 3 holes past the last hole the seam is still secure in. The needle is then threaded through the hole directy opposite this and out of the hole directly next to it.
This is repeated again and again until the seam is entirely sewn back together. The repair will continue a minimum of 3 holes past the end of the area that had opened. Once completed the technician will cut the cotton from the needle and tie the ends a minimum of 3 times to secure the repair.
After this the technician will cut the extra cotton to finish off the repair. Typically if a seam has come undone on a seat base cushion we recommend that you look to get the seat base cushion repadded.
This being because more often than not the seam coming undone is a result of the padding in the cushion not holding the weight of the person sitting on it and it pulling the leather as a result of it dipping further than it should have to. Restoring the padding in the seat base cushion will take the pressure off of the leather and prevent the seam from pulling with use.
Completing the padding of the seat base cushion will prevent the seam from coming undone again or other areas of the stitching on the same cushion from bursting.
