Typically if a spring has gone in your sofa you will know about it. You can usually feel a significant dip in sitting down. Although sofas are all made differently and it is possible that your sofa could have springs underneath it, the most common sofas to have springs in the bottom are those with loose cushions. Loose cushions are those in which are removable from the frame.
If your sofa has loose cushions we would recommend lifting the cushions and applying pressure with your hand to the base. If you can feel that there is no resistance from a spring it is most certainly in need of some attention. Your spring could be snapped entirely as in the photo shown.
However it could be that the spring clip has broken and the spring has detached.
In order to determine what the issue is the technician will have to gain access to the underside of the sofa. First the technician will flip the sofa over and remove the two feet in the bottom corners.
Secondly the technician will remove the staples in the dust cover at the bottom of the sofa using a braddle and pliers. Once the cover is unattached from the bottom of the sofa, the technician will pull it back from the frame of the sofa to investigate the issue.
As per this picture, in this case the the spring had snapped entirely. The technician used a large screwdriver and a hammer to bang out the two halves of the spring from the clips. Once the two halves of the spring are removed from the sofa the technician will match the spring to one of its same size from stock they carry in their van.
After a replacement has been matched the technician will re fit the new spring into the existing spring clips should they not also need replacing. This will be done using a hammer to bang them into place ensuring the spring ends are tightly fitted. Now the technician will re attach the dust cover to the bottom of the sofa using a staple gun. Finally the technician will re attach the feet to the sofa and return it to an upright position. Typically we do recommend that if a spring has gone in your sofa you look to get your seat base cushions repadded. This being because it is usually that your cushion has failed that extra pressure has been put on the spring causing it to snap. Having the seat base cushion re padded will take away the extra pressure and likely prevent further structural damage from occurring.
